1. How IGBT works:
An IGBT is a transistor structure in which a MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) controls the switching action of a Bipolar bipolar transistor. IGBT is mainly composed of three parts:
- N-type channel area: This is the area formed by the N-type epitaxial layer and channel in the P-type substrate and is responsible for conducting electricity.
- P-channel area: This is the area formed by the P-type epitaxial layer and channel in the N-type substrate and is responsible for isolation.
- P-type saturation zone: This is a region consisting of a P-type substrate and a P-type epitaxial layer that is responsible for amplifying the current.
The working principle of an IGBT can be briefly described as follows: when the control input signal is applied to the gate of the IGBT, the voltage between the gate and the source controls the resistance in the channel area and the voltage in the P-type saturation area, thus controlling the flow of current. When the gate voltage is positive, the channel region will be turned on; When the gate voltage is negative, the channel region is truncated.
2. IGBT chip:
IGBT chip refers to the core part of IGBT device, which contains N-type channel region, P-type channel region and P-type saturation region. The IGBT chip controls the turn-on and cut-off of the current through the gate, and is responsible for the power switching function.
3. IGBT Single Tube:
IGBT single tube usually refers to a device that contains only one IGBT chip, which is the most basic IGBT package form. The IGBT single tube connects the pins of the chip to the external circuit through the package to realize the current control and withstand voltage function.
4. IGBT Module:
The IGBT module integrates multiple IGBT tubes and other auxiliary components (such as drive circuits, heat sinks) in one module. The main advantages of IGBT modules are higher power handling and better heat dissipation. In general, IGBT modules are available in larger packages and are suitable for high-power applications.
5. IGBT Devices:
IGBT devices generally refer to all electronic devices containing IGBT chips, which can be single tubes, modules or other forms. In most cases, IGBT chips refer to specific control components, while IGBT devices are a general term for all types of IGBT single tubes, modules and their variants.
Summary:
- The IGBT chip is the core part of the IGBT device and is responsible for the power switching function.
- IGBT single tube refers to a device containing only one IGBT chip, which is the most basic package form.
- IGBT module is the integration of multiple IGBT monotubes and other auxiliary components with higher power handling and heat dissipation performance.
- IGBT devices are a collective term for all types of IGBT tubes, modules, and variants.
These are the main differences between IGBT chips, IGBT single tubes, IGBT modules and IGBT devices. Understanding these concepts helps us to choose the appropriate IGBT solution for different applications and to understand its performance and characteristics.
